Common Questions
What is forestry mulching?
Forestry mulching is a mechanical process that uses a specialized attachment on a compact track loader (commonly referred to as a skid steer) to grind brush and saplings into a fine mulch on-site. This method is highly efficient for clearing overgrown areas without the need for heavy excavation or hauling.
What types of vegetation can you clear?
We specialize in mechanical reduction of brush, briars, trees up to 6" in diameter, vines, and invasive vegetation. Our equipment is designed to handle dense overgrowth and small-diameter growth effectively, making it ideal for fence lines, field edges, and blocked trails.
What should I expect after the process is complete?
The mulch look the same as what you buy in bags at the store. The mulch will have more variety in shape and size with larger strips throughout.
Anytime you allow more sunlight to the forest floor, it will stimulate growth. This mulch acts as a natural barrier, preventing future regrowth for a period and improving soil health. Plants will regrow but now you'll have the ability to control these areas. Trees and plants left to remain will have less competition and a nice addition of nutrients to the soil. It depends on each clients goals but we often encourage replanting of native plants and trees.
Is the material hauled away?
No, material is left in place right on the ground. The mulch will naturally breakdown over the course of the next 1-2yrs returning nutrients back to the soil over that time. You could broadcast grass seed, clover or ground cover during that time
Can you work on wet ground or heavy slopes?
The answer is - it depends. We can work with wet ground to a degree, however, the machine will disturb the ground. In certain circumstances, such as trail clearing, this is a non-issue but if access to the site is through a well-manicured lawn we would advise waiting for dryer months.
As for slope, we can work on fairly steep terrain but a site visit is always required before we can commit to a property.
Do you completely clearing the land of trees and stumps?
No, we encourage more of a selective process. We can take trees up to 6" diameter, however, we don't always think it's appropriate. Any trees that are removed will be mulched down even with ground level. The stumps themselves will remain in-place below the soil.
How much access does the equipment need?
Our equipment requires about 8' of clearance for access into the area of focus. This allows us physical access into the area. We'll need an area to unload the equipment off a trailer - all of this will be reviewed during the site visit.
How is the work priced?
Work is priced based on a per project basis. The area will be reviewed for vegetation density, terrain difficulty and general site conditions. We'll discuss the process and approach during the site walk. After the site visit, we will provide you with a clear estimate. If there is any discomfort with the evaluation we can discuss a daily rate.
Do you remove large trees?
No. Miller Landworks specializes in ground-based mechanical clearing and does not perform any tree removal over 6" in diameter. For larger tree work, you should contact a tree removal company. We do have a grapple so we can move downed trees to stockpile on-site.
Do you apply herbicides or pesticides?
No. We use mechanical clearing and mulching exclusively. We do not apply herbicides or pesticides to any properties. They are an effective tools that may be appropriate in certain situations but it is not work we preform. If you're at the point where you're considering spraying larger areas with pesticides you should give us a call first.
Do you completely clearing the land of trees and stumps?

If have several larger trees you want to remove, clearing the brush around the trees will almost certainly help getting a better price on their removal since the workers will now have much a much cleaner and safer work area.
How long does the process take?
Again, it depends. For most residential jobs, you should expect 1-2 days.
